Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (2015)

6B8FA881-4779-4C15-A6F5-1E3CDAFA4FD8This unpredictable and wacky book got my attention right from the first page. It was like reading someone else’s private journal. In it, you will find a running autobiographical narrative of the author’s life. It is a strange and quirky book, which at times actually made me laugh out loud by the totally outrageous things the author stated she had said or done. Reading this book was like catching up with an old, but very unusual friend.

The writing style of this 325 page book is funny and very informal. It is very interesting and easy to read. However, the book does contain some mature content, course language, and swearing, so it might not be suitable for everyone. It’s definitely adult humour.

The author struck me as having a highly creative mind and thought process, not to mention some quirks and a few obsessions. She writes about her struggles with mental illness, her daily life, her relationships, her cats, her vacation to Australia, and just about any thought that crosses her mind in a completely honest and amusing way. It’s no holds barred!

This has to be the most peculiar book I’ve ever read. Some of the things the author writes are so unbelievable, at times, I thought that her stories were pure fiction and totally made up. However, throughout the book there are photos backing up her claims, giving the author credibility. I was surprised each time I came across a photo of her bizarre antics and couldn’t help but laugh. You really have to see it to believe it!

This book is a rare find, and is bound to brighten your day with the author’s completely unique sense of humour. I would recommend this book to anyone who isn’t afraid to read something silly and outrageous once and a while. You can’t help but smile when you read this book.
